Tonight (5th April), a week before Easter Sunday, Queen Elizabeth II addressed the nation and the world in a rare televised speech amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.

It’s as the UK’s death toll from the virus reached almost 5,000 (4,974) today. As the country awaits a peak in new cases, the Government has warned that exercise out in public could be banned if people don’t stick to the guidance after the warmest Saturday of the year so far.

The Queen’s address to the nation had one simple message: unity

The Queen thanked all of those working on the frontline and everybody who has stayed at home. Clips of people clapping for carers and those working on the frontline were shown as HRM said “the moments when the UK has come together to applaud our carers will be a reminder of our national spirit.”

“It reminds me of the very first broadcast I made in 1940“

Said the Queen, now aged 93, as she reflected upon the speech she delivered alongside Princess Margaret to the evacuees in Wartime Britain:

“Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones, but we know deep down this is the right thing to do.

“Together we are tackling this disease.

I want to assure you that if we remain united and resolute, we will be able to overcome it.”

There’s a charm of having a King or a Queen, it reminds us Europe is the old world, and I see Elizabeth like a monarch who has made a good transition between this old world and the new one.

— Hugo Barbieux, Journalist from Belgium.

“Across the commonwealth and around the World, we have seen people coming together”

The Royals may now be on social media. They may also have had their own share of bad press in the last year. But, as Hugo said, her Majesty’s presence is timeless and the Royal family is a beacon of stability in this ever-changing world.

The Queen will once again go down in history for addressing the nation and the world during this difficult time.
